Do these exist?

I mean REALLY simple ones. As in, 5 pages of rules. Significantly simpler than DBA, Impetus, etc. Yet fun to play.

Any suggestions welcome.

Irregular Miniatures seem to have published rules like that. Anyone know what they're like?

trailape11 Oct 2010 5:18 p.m. PST

What could be simpler than DBA? I'd be interested to see,…

Sundance11 Oct 2010 5:55 p.m. PST

I don't have any specific rules recommendations, but go to freewargamesrules.com. There are a number of rulesets on there and they tend to be very much on the simpler side. You'll have to wade through them to decide which ones look good to you, but you should pretty much have your choice.

Coyotepunc and Hatshepsuut11 Oct 2010 6:01 p.m. PST

DBA v1.O is availble for free from the WRG website and is significantly simpler than the current version. Also, don't confuse DBA with DBM. DBA uses 12-element armies and plays very quickly.

Nick Weitnauer11 Oct 2010 6:11 p.m. PST

Look at Charge! over at the freewargamesrules site in the Ancients section. They are only half a dozen or so pages and look like fun. I read them but haven't gotten a second army built yet to play them with.

John the OFM11 Oct 2010 6:21 p.m. PST

Well, I would stay away form Newberry 'Fast Play Ancient Rules' if I were you.

Volstagg Vanir11 Oct 2010 6:25 p.m. PST

Cant beat the free suggestions already given for price, but;
rebelminis.com/miaranp.html {PDF} link {HC}
I haven't found any simpler than Mighty Armies.
Plays a little like DBA, a little like WarMaster.

Note that 'Ancients' and 'Fantasy' use the same core mechanics;
(in case my advice or the reviews seem confusing)
'Ancients' adds a build point system
(and doesn't use magic, obviously).

Keraunos11 Oct 2010 10:22 p.m. PST

when I was 16, I wrote a set of ancients rules for my plastic romans to fight my friends plastic gauls.

of course, they also relied on Mah Jong blocks to make a celtic hill fort -= to compensate for his guys having no armour, you see.

I think you cna probably make up as good a set as that, on 5 pages or less.

sector5112 Oct 2010 12:36 a.m. PST

DBA, 2 pages of rules. One of the simplest out there.

jameshammyhamilton12 Oct 2010 1:01 a.m. PST

DBA, 2 pages of rules and 40 pages of explanation ;)

Seriously I was going to suggest C&C ancients until I saw the five pages of rules requirement.

Have you looked at Basic Impetus? That is significantly simpler than Impetus.

psiloi12 Oct 2010 1:01 a.m. PST

How much depth are you looking for, and what kind of game – army or skirmish?(one man = one man) I have some i could shoot over if you want to take a look.

Shaun Travers12 Oct 2010 2:16 a.m. PST

DBA is only 4 pages and Basic Impetus is only about 6. I have been blogging with my experience with various fast play rulesets. Fast play does not equate to simple, but some of the rules are simpler than others.

The blog is at:
link

Specifically, you asked about the Irregular Miniatures Ancient Rules – I did a review and a replay of these!:

Review here:

Replay here:

They are not simplier than Basic Impetus and you have to create your own army lists.

I second Mighty Armies: Ancients as simpler, and loads of fun to boot. Did a replay with that too:
link

Rather than post more links, just look at this page for link to to replays:

The rules that may fall into you category that I have also played are:

Fantasy Rules! (TCE version is the best bet here)
Justified Ancients

Another set of rules that may qualify as 'simple' (it is all a bit relative here as I have only read the rules) would be Ancient and Medieval Wargaming Rules by Neil Thomas.

Lastly, I also second going to freewargamesrules.com as there are loads there that may be 'simple' but can't help you on which ones – I haven't really played any of them, although I have read through quite a few of them – they start to blur.

Try The Junior Generals website. I've not played them but they seem simple enough.

Pierce Inverarity12 Oct 2010 4:58 a.m. PST

Thanks guys, that's very helpful. I'll check it all out.

Given Chess is simple, I guess I shouldn't have said 'simpler' but 'shallower.' IOW, you had a beer or three, and little experience with the rules, and yet you still stand a fighting chance. Unless you keel over, that is.

Also, 6'x4'.

Bobgnar12 Oct 2010 5:36 a.m. PST

DBA is a simple game, but difficult to understand. If you do not plan to play in competition, then do not worry about getting it 'right.' Just play it as you read it. By the way, the basic game is for 12 stands of figures per army, but easy to expand to any number of elements on any size table, with any scale figures.

Who asked this joker12 Oct 2010 6:29 a.m. PST

DBA can be difficult to play well. however, even after a few beers, you can still understand how to play DBA. You might not play well though! YMMV.

I would definitely check Free Wargames Rules. Mighty Armies Ancients is another good choice for simple.

Junior General: Doesn't get easier than that! Lots of stands on the board. Very few rules and modifiers.

Jeff96512 Oct 2010 6:56 a.m. PST

Simplicity in practice or sip over at the AMW yahoo group, there is a set of rules there for classical and medieval periods based on the one page H&M rules in this months battlegames. You will have to join the group to access the file section but thats no hardship and it's a goldmine of simple rules.

bruntonboy12 Oct 2010 8:02 a.m. PST

I was just about to suggest 'Ancient and Medieval Warfare' as well….

Quite simple rules and plenty of back up in the book as well.

parrskool12 Oct 2010 8:05 a.m. PST

'Ancient and Medieval wargames' by Neil Thomas. It has all you could want as a beginner.

rddfxx12 Oct 2010 8:11 a.m. PST

There are two classics, 'A Fistful of Miniatures' and 'Rules According to RAL'

Here is a link to the latter

TKindred12 Oct 2010 10:56 a.m. PST

Oh… I second the 'Rules according to Ral'. Great intro set of rules and easy to modify to other, earlier eras.

Smokey Roan12 Oct 2010 11:45 a.m. PST

Keraunos,do you mean plastic Roamns and Guals from Marx, in 54mm, or Esci, in 20mm?

Either way, you brought back fond memories of me as a chil'

mollinary12 Oct 2010 12:03 p.m. PST

Never mind the five pages. Go for C and C ancients. The basic game, whether with blocks or figures, is quick, fun, addictive and easy to pick up. And it gets better the more you try it. And it is pretty well immune to alcohol! Unlike the players!

Cheers,

Mollinary

Or you could go for the 'advanced' version

Roll a dice, 1-5 the Romans win, 6 Roll again ;)

I've used several versions of Ancients rules starting with Tony Bath's found in Donald Featherstone's WAR GAMES. In the early 1990's I discovered DBA 1.0 and liked it a lot. Kept with it up to 2.2, but got tired of the repeated 'tweaking.' In the last two years I've switched to Neil Thomas' ANCIENT and MEDIEVAL WARGAMING. It's only six pages long and very easy to play unlike the various DBAs and their obsession with geometry. I recommend the Thomas rules for their ease of understanding and play. I also like the influence of the late Tony Bath on them.

It just doesn't get simpler than DBA or historical HotT.

The percieved complexity, in my experience, stems from competitors trying to 'interpret' the rules to thier advantage. I had dozens and dozens of fast, easy, freindly games before I played in a competition. Even then, I played many competative games before I ran into a 'rules lawyer.'

The HotT rules are a little easier for a beginner to comprehend because they use simpler language and more diagrams.

As for 'tweaking'; the current version of DBA is 2.2. Over the years there have been some adjustments to army lists and clarification of some rules and a few changes to some. However, you can looka t v1 and v2.2 they are clearly the same game. It never ceases to amaze me that the same people who ask for adjustments or clarifications are the same people who complain when a new version is released that contains what they asked for.

mashrewba13 Oct 2010 11:35 a.m. PST

I love the Neil Thomas rules and also DBA/HOTT.
Maybe Justified Ancients.

Asterix13 Oct 2010 7:19 p.m. PST

Hey folks, I said I LIKE DBA. I thought that the 2.0 version was tops, but then there was a 2.2 version which, if you really look at it was a 'tweak' of 2.0. Now I have heard of a possible 2.3. That's not surprising when you consider DBA's lineage with the WRG.

But I'm not going to be pushed into a DBA vs Neil Thomas fight. I like both and they have given me and my opponents a lot of enjoyment fighting Ancient war games. Can't ask for more than that.

I think you are talking about DBM – and agree the tweaking of DBM turned people off.

Hi Smokey,

They were Essex – we couldn't find Airfix ones, and the Atlantic ones had disappeared by the time we discovered pre ww2 as an option.

Happy Friday, friends!

Two big things–first, I’m doing an Instagram Live takeover for the @StarbucksReserve account to give everyone a tour of their new Roastery opening on Michigan Avenue this morning! EEEK! Send me good vibes!

Second, I’m excited to be doing another styling session today with two IG friends who I think you will love following: Christin and Karla! I love teaming up with new influencer friends to style the same items several different ways, because it gives you guys so many more ideas!

We’ll all be publishing video styling sessions on our Instagram stories later today, so be sure to keep watch for those to go up later this afternoon! But until then, we’ll dive into this topic here on the blog!

Today’s styling session topic: Ankle boots with cropped pants!

When the three of us were discussing what to style, we all agreed that wearing ankle boots with cropped pants seems to be a pain point that EVERYONE has, so I hope you really love today’s tips and tricks!

To kick us off…let’s jump into some tips first!

Two rules of thumb for styling ankle boots:

#1: You always want there to be a little bit of space in between your pant leg and your boot. Not TOO much, but just a sliver! This is the most foolproof rule to follow to ensure your outfit is always flattering! This typically means you’re going to need a boot that is cut a bit higher on the ankle–above the ankle, so it hits at the slimmest part of your ankle rather than right at the ankle bone. If your booties are TOO low cut, it will look funny!

#2: (I never really thought about putting this into words before, but I actually learned it from Karla in her “high ankle boot styling session”–when she explained it this way, it made SO much sense!) When you’re going for a cropped pants look, you want the boots to be slimmer than your pant leg. AKA, your pant leg should be wider than the shaft of your boot. This will still flatter the ankle! Otherwise it might make it look like you have odd tree trunk ankles. ?

You can wear socks!! So many people say to me, “but don’t your ankles get cold?” You can absolutely wear socks–just make sure they’re socks that go with the color scheme of your outfit. I find that typically a charcoal grey or black sock works best! If you’re looking for a great, warm pair, I highly recommend SmartWool socks!

Some of my favorite pairs of ankle boots:

J.Crew Booties:

I just picked these up at J.Crew this past week, and they do not disappoint! Actually, I had planned to purchase this other leopard pair, but the shaft hit too high on my ankle and rubbed even just walking around in the store! I also think because they’re higher cut on the ankle, they’re actually harder to wear with cropped pants because then there isn’t space in between the pant and the bootie! BUT, thankfully I did find this pair–it has a pointier toe and a kitten heel, which make them really comfortable and more sleek due to the cut of the toe! They run TTS–I walked a lot in them the first day I wore them and no blisters, rubbing, or pain! They’re great!

Everlane Day Boots:

I own these in three colors and they are hands down the BEST ankle boots you can buy when it comes to comfort! They feel like literal butter on your feet because the leather is so soft, and the heel is just enough to make you look chic, but not so tall that you can’t walk for miles in them! My latest color obsession is the “ecru” color, but I also wear the “cognac” color a ton too!

Other Everane styles: I’ve got my eye on the Boss Boots as well. I actually thought they were too “edgy” for me in the past, but I actually really like how the snakeskin looks styled in an outfit––what do you think?! I also love the look of their Heel Boot which is like an elevated heeld Chelsea, if you’re wanting to go for something a little more casual/classic!

Steve Madden Jillian:

These are nearly sold out, but I wanted to list them because if you do wear one of the last few sizes, they are so worth snagging! They are the best neutral taupe, go with everything, have the perfect almond toe and are just so versatile. I’ve tried to find a similar version and can’t! ?

How to style ankle boots with cropped pants, 4 ways:

Outfit #1:

I love this casual look for everyday! Perfect for a weekend–day, or night! You can wear it out for a casual date night on Saturday night, or to your friend’s Sunday night football party the next day!

Featured styled staples:

Games

Everlane Alpaca Sweater:

Runs oversized, I’m wearing XS! This is probably my favorite sweater Everlane has made as of late, it is SO incredibly soft, and I love the brown/mustard hue–it’s so great for winter and looks flattering on a variety of skin tones! I also love the texture that it adds to every outfit!

J.Crew Jeans:

I LOVE these jeans. If you want a lightweight, super-soft jean with a ton of stretch, this is your pair! I love the raw hem and the way they’re cut–I always say these (and the Everlane jeans I’m wearing below) are the best “starter” jeans for those who are wanting to branch out from skinny jeans–they’re super classic, versatile, but still feel attainable and not too “trendy.” Run TTS!

J.Crew Booties:

Run TTS–I walked a lot in them the first day I wore them and no blisters, rubbing, or pain! They’re great!

(Scarf is old)

Outfit #2:

If you want to be casual and festive for holiday but don’t want to feel “over the top”––this combination is an awesome go-to! I think emerald and leopard print go together SO well–this is a perfect outfit to wear to a White Elephant party, Ornament exchange with girlfriends, or out to a cozy dinner! Need to dress it up? Just swap in a black skirt and tights!

Featured styled staples:

J.Crew Supersoft Turtleneck sweater:

I LOVE a good emerald green, but weirdly, I don’t own that much of it! (But I’m on a kick, because I just bought three things at J.Crew in emerald! ?)

Everlane Cheeky Straight jeans:

Like I said above, this is the other pair of jeans I always point people toward when they’re trying to branch out from skinny jeans! They’re a super flattering cut, straight, cropped, but again, still classic and they don’t feel too “trendy.” I also love the color (the wash is the “Indigo” wash). They run true to size in my case, I wear size 25.

J.Crew Booties:

Run TTS–I walked a lot in them the first day I wore them and no blisters, rubbing, or pain! They’re great!

Outfit #3:

*I really need to clean my mirror…sorry! ?*

This is a great dressed-up look that you can wear anywhere. (This is also an example of a go-to outfit I’d pack for travel! You can wear it day or night!) It’ll be appropriate for a nice dinner on the town and won’t look out of place if you happen to go to drinks at the pub down the street afterward.

Featured styled staples:

Dudley Stephens Park Slope fleece turtleneck:

Warmer than ANY sweater you own–these are the real deal. I have worn mine more times than I can count over the past few weeks when the temps have dropped. Also, I love that they’re a small, women-owned brand that is made from recycled plastic bottles AND made in Brooklyn! I know they’re an investment ($158) but they are great quality and I have friends who say they’ve had theirs for years and they’re still going strong! They’re so versatile–wearable from the office to a date night, a football game–they’d also be great to wear skiing to keep you toasty on the slopes! See how else I styled this top here! **Note: I just noticed that the black is out of stock now ?but I promise I’ll notify you guys when its back!**

Everlane wide-leg crops:

Another Everlane staple I own in several colors–they are TRULY the best, most flattering pants! So easy to dress up or down.

J.Crew Booties:

Run TTS–I walked a lot in them the first day I wore them and no blisters, rubbing, or pain! They’re great!

Outfit #4:

*I really need to clean my mirror…sorry! ?*

Same top, same shoes, totally new look! I wanted to demonstrate here how easy it is to adapt an outfit formula! With a simple swap of pants, this look becomes business casual–great for the office, but easy to transition from 9-5 to 5-9. You won’t feel weird or out of place grabbing drinks with your girlfriends after work!

Everlane Easy Pants:

I once had a reader DM me thanking me for turning onto these pants––she took a redeye to London and had to go straight from the plane into a presentation, and she said that even after the international flight, she looked polished and ready to go! They are wrinkle-resistant and super comfortable! They run TTS.
